Beware of Swine Flu Scams
Holy cow…the flu season is hitting fast and hard this year. We’re going through a flu outbreak here at Aria Medical, too. Every week as some people come back to work, more are out sick.
We don’t know if it’s Swine Flu or regular flu, though because the docs here in San Antonio aren’t testing for the specific strain anymore.
And this morning, a local radio station was talking about some of the Swine Flu scams that are going on out there. It always amazes me at how fast scammers jump on stuff like this. So I thought I’d pass this info on to you so you could protect yourself.
Because of the amount of scams being seen, the Better business Bureau is joining in to warn consumers about possible fraud. Here are some things to keep on the lookout for:
- Any Swine Flu related emails from an unknown source asking for personal info, asking you to click on a link or asking you to open an attachment. This kind of email is considered “Phishing” for personal info or your computer could become infected if you actually click on a link to a site that has malware or spyware ready to infect. Another possiblility is the sender is trying to get you to click a link to their online pharmacy. They write compelling subject lines like “Britney Spears Gets Swine Flu!” to get you to click. If you get any of these emails, the Federal Trade Commission is asking you forward them to spam@uce.gov.
- Requests for donations for Swine Flu victims. Scamsters are trying to tug at your heartstrings so be strong and realize these requests are most likely scams.
- Sales pitches for products that prevent Swine Flu. This is big on Craigslist right now but you could also receive an email. Everything from fresh air machines to immune-boosting drinks are being sold. It’s up to you whether you purchase any of these products but simply sticking to the CDC’s recommendations to control the spread of the flu is good enough.
It’s so frustrating that we all have to be so careful but it’s good to be informed. Good luck staying away from the flu this season!
