Swine Flu Scares Many

According to Liz Szabo of USA Today, the Swine Flu is a “common respiratory disease in pigs that doesn’t usually spread to people. When pigs catch this flu, many get quite sick, and 1% to 4% die. In the past, people have sometimes caught swine flu if they worked directly with pigs.”
Over the past week, the confirmed number of offical swine flu cases has risen to 40 in the United States, People all over the world are scrambling to contain the virus, which has killed 149 people in Mexico, where the virus has spread most rapidly.
So what can you do to prevent from getting the Swine Flu?
- As always, you should frequently wash your hands.
- Also, if you are in a crowded place, it would be safe to wear a mask. According to the Center for Disease Control, “N95 respirator masks filter out 95% of particles to prevent the wearer from breathing them in.”
- As with any flu virus, it is also wise to avoid close contact with sick people. The flu is primarily spread through sneezes and coughs.
- If you do get sick, be sure to stay home and sneeze or cough into your elbow and away from others.
You can not get the Swine Flu through pork. Swine Flu Symptoms are very similar to that of the normal flu, and include:
- Cough
- Congestion
- Fever
- Sore Throat
- Lack of Appetite
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Body aches and pains, particularly in joints
- Weakness, fatigue and low levels of energy.
